We found some of Grandpa Ed Hess’ negatives from the 1920s and 1930s–these were taken around today’s driving range at Hi-Level.
We showed the pictures to Dale, one of the neighborhood kids who worked on Hess Farms in the 1950s. He didn’t know anyone in these photos, but said, “that looks like the pony they had in the 1950s. He used to swim with us in the pond!
“One day Ed was taking some people on a tour, the kids were riding the pony and the parents were talking to Ed. They were near the breastworks of the pond and the next thing we knew–the pony jumped in with the kids still on and swam to the other side. The kids were still on the saddle, too. Later Ed told us, ‘You know…you probably shouldn’t take the pony swimming anymore.’ That was it–anyone else would have yelled at us, but he just said don’t take the pony swimming.”
